Right Track 5

Barry Norman is well known
throughout the model railway hobby
for his layouts of Lydham Heath and Petherick.
You may also have seen his books:
"Designing a Layout" and "Landscape Modelling"

In this,
the first of two programmes,
Barry shows how he lays the basis
for his excellent model railway scenes.

Beginning by researching the prototype,
he explains the methods he uses
to find the details he will need
for the completed model.

He then describes
how he designs the layout
to include the most interesting aspects
of the prototype
and show them to their best effect.

Having designed the layout,
he then sets about the more practical aspects
of baseboard construction
and making landforms
before laying , texturing, colouring
and detailing the landscape.

Laying, painting and weathering the track area
and fencing is covered
and the programme closes
with a guided photographic tour
of his two most well-known layouts.

Right Track 6, which will be available in February 2007,
will complete the landscape with trees, water and a country lane.

Right Track 6 - Modelling Landscapes 2

In this, the second of two landscape modelling DVDs,
Barry Norman continues on from Right Track 5.
Here, he dresses the landscape
with trees, hedges, a country lane and water effects.

He begins by modelling a country lane
and shows how he forms a cart track, hedges and a cornfield.
The texture and colouring of these elements is important
and he explains the methods
he uses to make superb model landscapes.

Modelling water is one of the most challenging of subjects
and Barry explains how he goes
about forming ponds and small rivers,
carefully selecting materials
and colours to give the best effect.

The many types of tree in the countryside
require different approaches
and Barry models deciduous trees, pine trees and a winter tree.
Starting with the basic elements,
he creates some most realistic models.
He then goes on to show how he formed a pine forest
for his Lydham Heath layout.

A major inspiration for Barry has been the Pendon Museum.
The DVD includes two sections
based upon this magnificent EM gauge model
and Barry takes you on a tour of the layout
and gives a potted history of the museum's development.

The DVD contains the following sections: -

Goods Yards
Cornfield
